Hispanic Population in San Diego County

    1.The census numbers show that one out of every four San Diego County residents is Latino.

A decade ago, it was one out of five. And the population is increasing fast.

    2.Latino population rose nearly 50 percent in the past ten years.

    3.The county's Latino population boomed from 510,781 to 750,965, continuing a

decades-long trend fueled by steady immigration and high  birth rates, according to the census.

    4.Nationwide, the Latino population grew 60 percent to 35.5 million and may be large

enough to equal or surpass blacks as the nation's largest minority group.

    5.One in three of the nation's Latinos live in California

    6.In San Diego County, Latinos have the highest concentration in National City,

 where they make up 59 percent. In Chula Vista, they are almost 50 percent; Imperial Beach,

40 percent; San Marcos, 37 percent; Vista, 39 percent; Escondido, 39 percent; Oceanside,

30 percent; and San Diego, 25 percent. These cities showed substantial growth in the 1990s

    7.Latinos are projected to make up a third of San Diego County's population by 2020, according to the San Diego Association of Governments

• THE HISPANIC POPULATION IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY:

1. Is the fastest growing segment of the population. It is growing at a rate 3.9 times faster than the non-Hispanic population as a whole and 5 percent faster than Hispanics in all of California.

2. Represents 76 % of the total county population growth from 1990 to 2000.

3. Has a larger youth population. 37% of Hispanics are under the age of 18 compared with 26% of the County as a whole.

4. Is the eleventh largest in the nation. The third largest when coupled with the population of Tijuana.

5. San Diego County is third in California in the number of Hispanic-owned firms,  and the fifth in the U.S.

6. Coupled with the number of firms in Tijuana, the region ranks third in the nation in number of Hispanic-owned firms

Given its international border with Tijuana, Mexico, San Diego is a point of entry into  the U.S. for some 55,000 people each day. There are 5 to 6 million northbound border crossings every month at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa stations. For marketing purposes, the San Diego Hispanic marketis said to

include not only county's own   Latinos, but also the 2 million-plus residents in the city of Tijuana.
